Happy Teachers' Day to All Teachers!

Tomorrow is Teachers' Day and today is supposed to be a day when everyone would give their teachers presents. For me,my present for Miss Tan would be ready in November. It would be in my report book.I had planned to give my teacher a different present this year.I didn't have any presents like a stuffed toy or something wrapped up in a box like my friends to give Miss Tan because I was working on it.To be specific, working and revising actually. That's right.I'm going to show Miss Tan my report book.I'm going to try my best though I'm sure I cannot achieve what Miss Tan wants.I'll just show her that I had tried my best.Hope It works although Miss Tan is going to read this!
In the meantime, here's a poem that I wrote myself specially for Miss Tan:

I'll smile,
if you smile.
I'll frown,
if you frown.
There's always happines
when you're around

Thank you,
for your support.
Thank you,
For your dedication
I'm thankful and grateful
Because you're never on vacation

Always minding us
without any hesitation

All of this is said with love and truth
Here's something meaningful for you.
HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY TO YOU!!!

Halley Comet

I have Good news and Bad news.
Halley comet is coming soon! It all started at 240 B.C. It appered at 1301,1378,1456,1531,1607,1682,1759,1835,1910 and1986. Every 77 years it comes so we might see it at 2062. Author: Mark Twain was born in 1835 when Halley Comet was shooting across the sky.He said"It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley Commet." On April 21, 1910, the day after the comet returned,Twain died.
Now for the bad news.
A scientest discovered in another galaxy there's not one, not two but hundreds of black holes. Worse, there's a black hole in the center of our galaxy!! It might come soon....

Mars spectacular

The "Mars August 2006"spectacular is a widely-circulated email. The message claims that the planet Mars will make a once- in-our-lifetimes remarkably close approach to Earth on 27 August 2006.I went to the search engine in Yahoo to search if this was true.I found out that this was absolutely FALSE.Mars did make an extraodinarily close approach to Earth several years ago, culminating on 27 August 2003.So please do not go searching for Mars in the sky on 27 August in the middle of the night. More information can be found at http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp Bye for now!

A PLEASANT POEM

THE FRIENDLY COW, ALL RED & WHITE, I LOVE WITH ALL MY HEART
SHE GIVES ME CREAM WITH ALL HER MIGHT, TO EAT WITH APPLE TART . SHE WANDERS LOWING HERE &THERE, AND YET SHE CANNOT STRAY, ALL IN THE PLEASANT OPEN AIR, THE PLEASANT LIGHT OF DAY; AND BLOWN BY ALL WINDS THAT PASS, AND WET WITH ALL THE SHOWERS, SHE WALKS AMONG THE MEADOW GRASS, AND EATS THE MEADOW FLOWERS.
HOPE YOU LIKE IT! =)

Accompanying my mother

Today,I accompanied my mother to a one-year-old baby's birthday party(It is her colleague's daughter and I could have been staying at home playing computer games..:) ).My father sent me there and we took the lift to the fifteenth floor where the party was being held.Firstly,I ate lunch there(Lunch was fried beehoon with chicken). Then,I went to the living room and watched some Chinese shows on TV.After some
time,we went to the dining room to sing the birthday song and eat the cake. The party was soon over.We said goodbye and went to do some things(sorry I can't tell you,it's a secret but you've probably guessed it). After that,we ate a cup of milkshake and went home.

Attack of the insects and others

Woah ! Yes , it is the attack of the insects happening here at my home . Why ? Today, there was like so many insects here !

First , there was a cockroach in the toilet , and at that time my sister was using the toilet .
Second , she discovered a bee near her table at the curtain . But the window was CLOSED ! I am not going to describe any further in order not to frighten you.Weird, right ? But why ? Nah , I'm not making this up , and it does really sounds very fake to me. Oh, what is happening?? So many bad things happened today....

1)My sister lost her pen;Haa ?
2)Attack of the cockroach;My enemy
3)Attack of the bee with a sting! OUCH
4)Ants in the popcorn;Grrr.....Lots of it
5)Big Moth on my CPU , Biggest Moth seen ; Can't get rid of it..

Nicola's Blog _ Powerpoint slides

Hi! everyone, I am Nicola.
This morning, when I was looking for my pencil, I discovered a disc . It was called "learning Powerpoint" belonging to my Father. So, I asked my Father if I could use it on the laptop computer? So, he said "you can!".
I immediately went to load the disk on the computer.
First: they taught us how use "wordart ".
Second: they taught us how to use the "movie maker".
It was very complicated so I askd my Father for help. Soon, I got used to the complication .
But as the computer told me more ,I learnt more and more.
As the information became more and more I was more and more confused! I stopped the program and will continue to learn a little bit at a time; I cannot take so much new stuff at one time!
My Father also said I could use the laptop on the internet for blogging. We went with my sister , Hayley to Causeway Point to use the computer in the library. We did not need cables to connect to the internet as it was wireless and far quicker than home.
All the typing left my hands and fingers tired quite quickly! I will blog some more when my Father takes me to the National library when I'm not so tired.
Until the next time I see you all; bye bye
Nicola

Our Science Lesson

Hello!Yesterday,Miss Tan let us experiment with our new topic,Magnets! We were really excited because Mrs. Audrey Lim was coming to watch Miss Tan teach and us work. Not only that,we were also excited with the experiments that were being set up by Miss Tan.There was a system which we had to follow.Every group would be rotating clockwise to the next group whenever Miss Tan rings the bell. The first group,Station 1,was about identifying and classyfiying magnetic and non-magnetic materials. The second was about making a magnet. The third was about poles of magnets that attract and repel.Station 4 was about making a compass with a magnet. And lastly,Station 5 was about using the computer, going to www.lead.com.sg and doing the activities about magnets there. We had an activity sheet to do for each station and a filler (worksheet) to do to occupy ourselves. Before all these activites,we did a 'KWL' chart.'K' is for what we know.'W' is for what we want to know. And 'L' is for what we have learnt.Everyone did it together and my,was it beautiful! We had lots of information and questions. After that,Miss Tan showed us a clip on www.lead.com.sg about magnets. We had some answers for the questions asked and then,we started conducting the experiments starting from our groups. Here's what I know and found out from some of the experiments:
  1. Magnets can only attract things made from materials like iron, steel, cobalt and other metals.
  2. Magnets have two poles which we can call north-seeking and south-seeking poles.
  3. How to magnetize a magnet using the 'stroke' method.
  4. If you want to magnetize a magnet, you have to stroke it for about 20 to 50 times.

Well, that's what I learnt.I enjoyed the whole thing. The best part was at Station 2,where we had to make a magnet that can hold at least one magnet. After every group tried all the experiments,Miss Tan gave us some free time to do our activity sheets and fillers.Soon, our lesson was over and we greeted Mrs. Lim goodbye. This was the most interesting topic in Science I've ever learnt!Bye!

Magnets

I am going to tAn electric current generates a magnetic field, and unpaired electrons spinning on atoms act as small electro-magnets pointing in particular directions ie they have a "north" and a "south" pole. When they point in the same direction on all the atoms, the material itself acts like a magnet; it is called a ¶ferromagnet, since the simplest example is BCC iron. Of course a lump of iron is not normally a magnet, but has to be "magnetised" by some other magnet. This is because the raw material consists of many magnetic crystallites whose magnetic moments cancel each other until they are aligned.
If the magnetic moments or "spins" on the atoms are in opposite directions on the atomic scale, they also cancel, and the material is called an ¶anti-ferromagnet. Manganese flouride (MnF2) is a simple example. The moments on the Mn atoms at the corners of the cube point in one direction, and at the centre of the cube they point in the opposite direction. Since there are equal numbers of each (when many of these unit cells are stacked together), they cancel exactly.
The most famous anti-ferromagnetic, ¶manganese oxide (MnO) helped earn the Nobel prize for C. Shull, who showed how such magnetic structures could be obtained by neutron diffraction (but not with the more common X-ray diffraction). This material also has the simple BCC ¶rock salt structure, but here the basic unit is doubled in all three directions; the Mn moments in one plane point in one direction, and in the opposite direction in the adjacent plane.
¶Magnetite or "loadstone" has been known as a magnet from antiquity. It is one of the common oxides of iron (Fe3O4) and is also cubic, with iron in two valence states. The formula might be simplistically written FeO.Fe2O3 with Fe++ as FeO and Fe+++ as Fe2O3. The Fe+++ occupy the tetrahedral holes, and half the octahedral holes, with the Fe++ occupying the other half. (The charge-ordering of Fe++ and Fe+++ at low temperature (110K) produces the famous Verwey transition). The magnetic moments on the octahedral sites are antiferro-magnetic and cancel (not shown), while on the tetrahedral sites they are ferro-magnetically aligned. Such a mixture of anti- and ferro-magnets is called a ferr-i-magnet.
Many magnetic structures are much more complex. Neutron diffraction, and especially the Rietveld method for powder diffraction, has been used to solve these more complex magnetic structures, such as that of ¶MnTa4S8. Single crystal techniques using polarized neutrons and strong magnetic fields are needed however, to understand the most complex magnetic structures.
The discovery of new types of magnets has had great industrial importance - try counting how many small electric motors are used in a modern automobile - most made from synthetic magnets. Or consider the importance of magnets in communications and other electronic equipment. The so-called ¶hard magnets, whose structure was again found using neutron diffraction, are examples of these important new materials. This material (Nd2Fe14B) consists of layers of iron (orange) with interleaved neodinium (purple) and boron (blue): neutrons show that hydrogen (white) can also be accommodated
Some of the most exiting recent results are being obtained with Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) oxides such as ¶(La,Ca)MnO3. Already such materials are being used by IBM to make computer hard drives of much higher capacity. This GMR material has a familiar perovskite-type structure, which is subtly distorted with temperature. The complex magnetic structure is not shown, but this, together with the structural distortions, are important for understanding the unique properties of these materials. The details of the valence and spin ordering in this material is the ILL Grenoble's most most cited current work.
More unusual structures can be formed when the magnetic moments are aligned at different angles to each other; for example ¶Er6Mn23 has a particularly interesting magnetic structure with moments on both types of atom. Even more complex structures are produced when the moments form a spiral structure extending over many unit cells. Such difficult structures can only be obtained with neutron diffraction from single crystals; they help us understand better the subtle balance of forces in these materials.
We have concentrated on the structures of relatively simple materials that are of interest for physical applications. Now let's look at some structures that start off being simple, but end up being complicated ! The first of these are the layered structures, important examples of which we already saw with the oxide superconductors. There are many more, ranging from the moly-disulphide lubricant in your car's engine oil, to the treacherous clay montmorillonite ! About Magnets.

Poems and Quotes

Hello.. here's a poem that I would like to share with you. I will share with you at least one poem every day if I can. :) It is by Kenn Nesbitt and it is very funny.

My sister's name is 'Seven'
My sister's name is "Seven"
and my brother's name is "Eight."
My parents gave them freaky names
I'm sure they thought were great.
They could have named him "Michael"
and they could have named her "Sue."
Instead they both decided that
no normal names would do.
My brother could be "Brandon."
Maybe "Benjamin" or "Bill."
They could have named him "William"
and then simply called him "Will."
My sister could be "Sarah."
Maybe "Kimberly" or "Kelsey."
They could have named her "Caroline"
or "Katherine" or "Chelsea."
My brother could be "Steven"
or they could have named him "Todd."
But instead, his name is even
and my sister's name is odd.

Let's Dance!

Hi,remember the performance I told you about? It is over and I would like to share more with you all. This is a collaboraton between the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace Little Companions Arts Troupe and Crestar School of Dance,Singapore.

Look at the picture above, see how poise and graceful they are! But,hey, don't get the wrong idea,I'm not that perfect yet and I'm not there either. These are the young ladies from Shanghai. They are in their primary school age just like us.Everyday, they would proceed to the China Welfare Institute for daily practice after school.Their perfction is due to their hardwork.

Now, spot me!This is hard as the picture is blur and everyone looks alike....

Just for your infomation, I'm in the second row from the bottom, kneeling beside the tallest girl.

I had alot of fun during my 2 days of performance and I feel honoured to perform with the Shanghai Troupe.I hope that one day, I would be as good as they are.Bye,for now!

Babies

Yesterday, I went to my uncle's house. I didn't exactly know why we were going there but I was glad. I have two baby cousins and two toddler cousins who live there and I tell you, they're sooooo cute! I love taking care of them and watching them do cute, baby stuff. It makes me feel like I'm their mother. Usually, their parents, especially their mothers work so I take care of them. There's actually a maid but she's always too busy taking care of my pesky twin cousins. I call them 'sumo wrestlers' because their soooo chubby and quite fat too! Yesterday, Atiqah, one of my baby cousins, her toddler sister, Balqis and their parents went out and came back just as we reached the flat. Their parents bought two videos: Hi-5 and Barney. When I was carrying Atiqah, suddenly, she screamed, "Banny! Banny!" She actually meant to say Barney but she hasn't learnt to say 'r' yet. She was so excited that her father had to put in the CD and let her watch. When the song came on, Atiqah screamed again and again. My other baby cousin, Leya, heard the noise and came to watch the video too. She was quite funny, just following what Atiqah said even though she didn't know what was happening. We watched the show and then changed to Hi-5 until alot of people started coming. I think there was a meeting between my uncle and his siblings. I really was puzzled. But I just stayed in the room, playing with the babies. When all the children came into the room, they started playing with Balqis, the toddler. She acted crazy, disturbing people everywhere. I know her, and I knew that she was acting just to get attention. The noise level grew, and Atiqah couldn't sleep well. Leya had gone and slept in her own room. I tried to get Atiqah to sleep, following her father's instructions but she was distracted. I got hungry and went out to eat. After that, I played Captain's Ball with my cousins outside. We really looked like It had just rained! At about 7.00 p.m., we went in and watched the National Day Parade on the television. I thought that watching the parade on the television is better than being there because they have close-ups and we can just increase the volume whenever we can't hear them. I went home at about 10.00 p.m. after watching the Singapore Idol and eating once more. I had lots of fun there and I hope that I'll have many cute babies when I grow up. :)

Singapore's 41st Birthday

Today Greenwood Primary School celebrated Singapore's birthday. More than 2000 people came just to watch the concert. Everyone was dressed in red, some in their school uniforms and even traditional costumes! We were talking non-stop as we were excited about the event.
Soon,a teacher spoke into the microphone and we stopped talking to listen to his instructions.
The first thing we did was sing the national anthem followed by the ceremony song, My People, My Home. After that, we recited the pledge.
Next was a play put up by pupils with different cultures. I thought that they did a great job acting and showing us how Singapore felt when hope was almost lost. I liked the part when the people of Singapore stood up to their country and they started singing the National Anthem. Later,Mr. Fahmi taught everyone a dance of different cultures. After learning the steps, we had a competition between the upper primary and the lower primary. The upper primary weren't very active and made fun with the way they moved. The younger pupils were very excited, especially the primary 1 pupils as they had never danced that way before. In the end, it didn't seem like a competition because Mr. Fahmi didn't tell us the winner. We were all relieved when Mr. Fahmi handed the microphone to another teacher. The teacher told us to move up to the hall so that we could see the concert put up for us.
My friends were all excited. So was I. We settled down quietly and soon thereafter, the concert began. The emcees were Mr. Saravanan and Ms. Siti Sarah. The first item was the 'I love Singapore' Competition. I could see that the classes who managed to get through the auditions worked hard to win. There were about 6 classes who were still in the competition.(I'm not sure how many) While the judges, Mr. Reddy, Mrs. Lor and Mr. George Cheah were deciding, Class 3B led us in the song 'Reach Out For The Skies'. As we ended the song, the judges gave the names of the classes in 3rd place, 2nd place and 1st place and the results were:
Primary 2B got 3rd place!
Primary 1F got 2nd place!
And.... the winner was... Primary 1E!
They ended the concert by a round of applause for everyone.
Miss Tan brought us back to class, only it wasn't 3A, it was 5B. I don't know what happened, but let's not talk about that for now. We got a packet of twiggies and a mineral waterbottle each and discussed our plans for the 2-and-a-half-day holiday. Some were going swimming, some were playing computer games, some were doing their homework, and some were just resting. The day ended and we had to go home. It certainly was an exciting morning today!

Hearts

After my organ lesson today, my mother decided to bring me to North Point to buy a POOH water bottle.
After I had chosen the one I like, we paid for it at the cashier counter.
Then , we went to another shop called 'Cards n Such'. In the shop I saw some soft toys, cards and some craft works. I was attracted to the colourful strips of paper that can be folded into lovely stars, flowers or hearts. I had a hard time making decision as all of them are so beautiful.
In the end, I chose the Hearts ! The picture above shows you how a heart can be folded and the other one shows you some of the hearts I had completed ! They are shiny , aren't they ? ....Constance....

shopping for things.........

Hi there! Today i went to the singapore expo to buy some things. I went there with my family.(not all my family.....my brother didn't come)
When we first reach there, my father spotted some posters. He liked the posters and started looking for some nice posters. I was interested in the posters and went to look at other things. Then i saw some cards. The cards had many different patterns. As i like cats, i bought some of the cat cards and many others
While my father looked at the posters and i looked at the cards, my mother went to look for some stationaries and said that she will meet us back at 3.00pm. When we had done chosing our cards and pictures, I went with my father to see some toys. (but i didn't buy any toys) After 1 hour my mother came back with a basket full of stationaries. Then i spotted some books. I went to see the books and bought 4 of them.
When we had done buying our things, we went to the casher to pay the things. Then after that we went into our blue picanto car and went home happily........................

Buying a birthday present

Today, my parents and I went to the shopping mall at Toa Payoh to buy a birthday present for one of my friends.

We walked along the corridor and saw a lady selling ice cream. She was not young anymore but what I adored about her was that she was very energetic and kept talking to the customers actively.

Her bussiness today was brisk, people coming and buy her ice cream non-stop , will be better if somebody could help her . We bought some ice cream , we ate (yummy ..yummy ) and continued to hunt for the present.

After searching for an hour, we managed to find a present for my friend and we happily went home.

$aving Money

This is simple. There are 5 ways to save money:
  1. Save 50 cents a day. That will give you $15 in a month and $180 a year.
  2. Earn some money, save some money and spend some money.
  3. Do not demand money from your parents. Use your own money.
  4. Buy something that's worth buying.
  5. Do not buy something that you can't afford.
