Our Science Lesson
Hello!Yesterday,Miss Tan let us experiment with our new topic,Magnets! We were really excited because Mrs. Audrey Lim was coming to watch Miss Tan teach and us work. Not only that,we were also excited with the experiments that were being set up by Miss Tan.There was a system which we had to follow.Every group would be rotating clockwise to the next group whenever Miss Tan rings the bell. The first group,Station 1,was about identifying and classyfiying magnetic and non-magnetic materials. The second was about making a magnet. The third was about poles of magnets that attract and repel.Station 4 was about making a compass with a magnet. And lastly,Station 5 was about using the computer, going to www.lead.com.sg and doing the activities about magnets there. We had an activity sheet to do for each station and a filler (worksheet) to do to occupy ourselves. Before all these activites,we did a 'KWL' chart.'K' is for what we know.'W' is for what we want to know. And 'L' is for what we have learnt.Everyone did it together and my,was it beautiful! We had lots of information and questions. After that,Miss Tan showed us a clip on www.lead.com.sg about magnets. We had some answers for the questions asked and then,we started conducting the experiments starting from our groups. Here's what I know and found out from some of the experiments:
- Magnets can only attract things made from materials like iron, steel, cobalt and other metals.
- Magnets have two poles which we can call north-seeking and south-seeking poles.
- How to magnetize a magnet using the 'stroke' method.
- If you want to magnetize a magnet, you have to stroke it for about 20 to 50 times.
Well, that's what I learnt.I enjoyed the whole thing. The best part was at Station 2,where we had to make a magnet that can hold at least one magnet. After every group tried all the experiments,Miss Tan gave us some free time to do our activity sheets and fillers.Soon, our lesson was over and we greeted Mrs. Lim goodbye. This was the most interesting topic in Science I've ever learnt!Bye!
